Did you know that Snagit not only captures images but that you can also record Video with Audio?
Yes Snagit keeps getting better and better always one step ahead of all the Screen Capture Software out there.
However please note that this feature is only a small subset of the powerful screen recording and editing capability of Camtasia Studio. Camtasia Studio will allow you to record, edit, annotate and produce videos in all of the standard multi-media formats. It uses an optimized screen capture codec so the resulting files are small and highly compressed.
Back to Snagit, most of the time I notice that first time Snagit users usually ask whenever they record a video from player, website or application, why the audio is missing once playing the videos on the editor.
I encountered the same problem but I soon discovered how easy it is to fix the problem and make it work. I will share with you the steps below. Although it may look long winded don’t give up, if you follow the instructions step by step its very easy and you only need to do it once.
How to record a video with audio in Snagit:
Click on the Light Blue Round button with an arrow beside the Capture button and choose Video Capture. See image above.
Make sure that under the Options area, the Microphone is highlighted or on.
Now click on the tab Output with an image written “None Selected” , then go to Properties, on Audio options, make sure that the Audio capture device is set to your sound card, click Apply then OK.
Once done with setting up the necessary functions on Snagit, proceed to configuring the recording input in your Window Record Control.
Go to Start > Control Panel > Sounds and Audio Devices > Audio tab. In Sound recording area, make sure that your sound card is set as the Default Device, click Apply then OK.
Now, under the Sound recording area, click on the Volume button, this will open the Record Control box. Once there, choose Options > then Properties.
Put a check on the box beside the following options: Stereo Mix, Mono Mix, What you hear, Mixer, Wave out mix and Wave in, then click OK.
Back to Record Control box, put a check on the Select button corresponding to each property that you checked earlier, then close the box.
If you follow these steps and it fails, you may want to update your sound card or if your sound card does not support recording audio-generated applications, you may use a jumper wire. Just place the jumper wire between Line Out and Mic In on the Sound Card, making the Line In as the recording source.
Alternatively you may own an older version of Snagit that needs upgrading to the latest version Snagit 9.0. You may request upgrade for Snagit here.

Peter – Your Snagit Guide
Listen, non of those options mentioned before will work. It took me one hour to understand about the Snagit and here is the solution: Very simple, cheap and easy: Just get a stereo audio cable and connect one end to the Microphone (audio input)jack and the other one ie n the speaker (audio output) jack. This will simulate a microphone as the Input device and the Snagit will respond. Then go to the Control Panel, Audio, Recording and choose MIC for input..Record anything using Snagit, unplug the audio cable, play back and you will feel happy Thanks.
Hello F D,
The reason the mentioned methods don’t work is because your sound card can’t record “what you hear”. There are two problems with the method you mention, but unfortunately it’s the only method if you have that kind of sound card. The problems are that 1) you get worse quality of the recording and 2) you don’t hear anything while having the cable connected thus it can be hard to record some things.
Hello,
What is the solution then? I have a laptop – no switching out sound cards in my future – so, how can I make this work? I need the ability of recording audio that is playing on my system. Any FREE programs out there that will enable this to work? I really don’t want to do the rigging option the first commenter said… Thanks
Hi Dale,
As the problem is hardware related and not software related there is no software that will fix this. You should check and download the latest upgrade of your sound card drivers. That may fix it.
Dale, you may want to try Audacity. It might be your solution.
Hi!
Any guide for windows 7 64. No sound there.
Hi Nicolas,
The same should apply to win7 64 bit. Have you tried if you can record sound outside Snagit, just using your regular Windows Sound Recorder? Start there.
Peter,
Thanks for the guide. I just used it for my HP Pavilion laptop and it worked.
tc
hi, i have windows 7 64bit and there is no such option on the mixer or the sound properties… i can record sound normally through my built-in microphone, but i want to record directly from my system but i cant find the option anywhere.
thanks for any help you can provide
This worked! thanks for the awesome guide! Did not know about “What You Hear” option.
I did buy Snagit for Mac recently but there is no video capture included with it! Makes me really angry because there used to be an option for video capture with the windows version! Waste of money!
Hi Vincent,
Snagit for Mac is the first released version. I am sure that video capture/screen recorder will be included in future releases. I would also argue against waist of money, I think it’s an excellent screen capture software.

Awesome!! Worked perfectly. I was wondering why it wouldn’t record audio. Thanks so much Peter!
thank you f.d. that worked perfectly.
Only wanna tell that this is extremely helpful, Thanks for taking your time to write this.

Hi! I’ve installed SnagIt and it’s all good, sound works and all, but I can’t click anything! So it just records my voice and screen, but I can’t do anything. Does anyone else have this problem? Can I get around this? Thanks!!
Hi Valerie,
Please give some more details. Do you mean you can’t click anything on screen while recording or?
Hi Valerie,
I had same problem – I could not click cells in Excel, nor click words in Word…. but I could focus on different Office docs or Windows 7 explorer. My workaroud is to use “Video Capture of Active Window”.
Hi,
I am able to record video of my work in Excel 2010 running on 64 bit windows 7. However, how can i get snagit 10.0.1 to record audio of my voice?
I tested my Lenovo Thinkpad’s Windows’ free internal sound recording and was able to record my voice, proving there is nothing wrong with my Thinkpad’s sound mic.
Thanks for your help.
I have a Vista 64 bit and it is not recording my voice on playback. It does everything right except no audio. I have tried the above steps but those steps are apparently not for Vista 64 bit. I’m a new user and wondered if anyone can help solve this problem…Mark
Hi Mark,
The instructions should work for 64 bits the same as 32. Often when I come across this problem the reason is that the audio card on the computer in question doesn’t allow you to record “what the computer hears”. My previous computer was an extremely high end computer, over $3,000 and with it came this exact problem. There were ways around it, for example I installed older drivers bypassing the settings of the audio card and so on but as soon as something new affecting the drivers was installed it lost the ability again. I tried putting wires from the audio out port to audio in port and various other solutions but it never worked in a good way. My guess is that this is your problem. It’s easy to check. just use the Windows sound recorder and see if you can record system sounds. If not then you need to change sound card to use your computer for this purpose.
how do you do it with snagit 11, becouse i dont even see the blue arrow next to the record botton.
Hello Valera, on Snagit 11 it is even easier. Chose video capture among your profiles, select the area you want to record, and just above on the right of your recorder you have the microphone setting. It’s a little green button. On the right-hand side of this button you also have the sources of recording the sound. These options will be controlled by your sound card and attached equipment.
Hope that helps. Happy snagging 🙂
Peter
ok, i went on that little arrow. There were 2 options and both of them were the same “Microphone high definition…” I dont want to record my voice during the video, but the music thats playing on my laptop during the video. Is that possible?
Thanks, your help will be greatlly appreciated.
Snagit cannot record system audio, it can only record from the microphones. And if you record the system audio it will be of poor quality. If you want to record system audio and also be able to edit your videos you should take a look at Camtasia Studio.
We are using snagit 9 at our company. now there is a problem. software got updated to 9 and we are now using windows 7, since those updates i can’t click on buttons in software anymore when recording the screen. if i stop snagit i can click around in the software. starting screen record simply freezes the window, but only those windows running software from terminal servers.
What could be the problem?
THX, Steffen
@Steffen: Hello, your Snagit version 9 software is not supported on Windows 7. A newer version is available, Snagit version 11 which is supported on Windows 7. All you need to do is upgrade to the latest version of Snagit. You can go to this address to get the latest Snagit upgrade: http://www.softwarecasa.com/snagit-upgrade.html

Peter,
We do web meetings for trainings over MeetNow app. We are buying SnagIt to record these meetings with audio so we can give the recording to more people who could not attend the meeting of for new hires later on. These trainings are conducted this way because we are a global company with many sites. What type of microphone set up would be best for recording both the presenters voice and what she does on the screen, as well as record the voices of the people being trained so their questions can be part of the video and audio recording?
Hello Keith,
Using Snagit, it is not possible to record the voices of people being trained. If you want to do that, you need to check out Camtasia Studio http://www.softwarecasa.com/camtasia-studio.html.
When recording, you should use a usb microphone. More expensive mic has better quality.
Cheers,
Macy
One meeting was going on in a conference hall with mic & sounds and i want to record all audio thru that mic on laptop sitting next to the conference hall room?
Please suggest me.
Thanking you
Snagit 11.1 video recording can record system sound plus microphone. It is not clear how far away the computer is but webcams are usually pretty good with capturing sound within something like 5 meters. My only suggestion is that you try it out and put the computer microphone in the center of the conference room for best recording.
Hey you guys just browse through your comments and i feel bad for those who are having trouble. The advice here help me and now im able to record flstudio with a breeze. So good luck to you guys
To those of you who are having a problem with HP laptops especially the HP compaq presario f700 because of the sound card STOP RIGHT NOW. You will not be able to fix this problem if you have tried everything and it says no sound card installed even after going through all the safe mode steps. Let me tell you how you can fix this nasty little problem that was made on purpose by HP manufacturer in order to make more money through tech support selling warranties ok? Go to amazon and buy a virtual 5.1 channel USB sound card for under $5 right now. Get it in 3-5 days and plug it in and it will work to get you sound. You wont have a speaker but you can use a $1 pair of headphones or buy a $5 speaker at Walmart. You can fix this. Dont grow any more gray hairs over this dumb problem. God knows I have. My ethernet plug in port went out, my sound card port went out and one other thing too. These are suppose to happen because of the way HP made the laptops though!! They did this on purpose. All you need is the USB sound card. Just type in the search on amazon — 3d sound card usb — . God bless you all and have fun.
Susie is definitely on the right track. If your sound card manufacturer drivers were never configured to allow “Record What You Hear” then moaning about the computer hardware, operating system, SnagIt or anyone’s customer service won’t solve your problems! You see, older and cheaper audio card manufacturers make inexpensive “one-time” build runs and move onto other jobs – they don’t make money on free upgrades and aren’t interested in customer loyalty (most of us don’t even know the manufacturer of our internal computer devices).
Bottom line, upgrade your sound device card with a reputable company with software drivers that include the ability to “Record What You Hear.” On my laptop, I use the Audigy plug-in card. You don’t have to plug anything into it to record system audio, just go to Control Panel and change your audio device to your new card – presto, you can no record what you hear.
Michael
Can you please reply I have an error while recording my video it says: Cannot open video file. The dimensions of this video file are not supported.
🙁 Please I need your help. Thanks
to Michael and and Susie I have an hp laptop envy dv6 and it does not say: no sound card installed; it works fine unfortunately I have an error I need to fix with.
Hi Charles,
What software are you trying to open it with?
I got snagit in two very high end machines, one has $500 Focusrite recording interface, and in both every time I use (even Camtasia recorder) the sound is terrible (sounds like very low bitrate), I have tried all possible audio settings, in both machines (one is an HP Beats) and no luck, I did some recording with Camtasia Recorder in version 7 and it worked (now I have 8) … so what’s the deal? is there a solution for this? I have a multimedia studio and now Camtasia does not do the job they used to. Toughs? Thanks!!
Sorry, I’m not very knowledgeable in sound matters. Can someone please explain why Snagit doesn’t have a option to pick up the audio stream that plays thru your speakers?
Following your instructions worked perfectly for enabling screen recording of system audio with Snagit9, and I’m not even an administrator on the machine. Thanks Peter!
OK Getting pretty frustrated now – CANNOT get sound to record with Snagit12. I do the capture and it even shows me the little sound meter responding to microphone sounds, but THE VIDEO DOES NOT HAVE SOUND. What the heck does it take to get sound to record with a video??? Can you guys please produce a CURRENT step-by-step guide as to how to get it to record mic sound (let’s try for that first, forget about system audio)? FOR SNAGIT 12?
