I received an email from a client trying to capture video in Snagit. But when trying to play the snagit video no sound was heard.
Hi Peter
I’m having a problem and wonder if you could offer some advice. The audio in
video clips with sound that I’m recording is not showing up any longer.
Until recently, the audio was just fine. I’m not aware of any changes I’ve
made in recording or settings. Do you have any suggestions?
Thanks a lot
Mark
Read on to find the solution to this common Snagit sound problem…
Hi Mark,
Good to hear from you.
The problem you are describing is not related to Snagit, it is related to the settings of your sound card.
Often these settings are changed by different software without you changing any settings. Any software that works with sound on your computer can actually influence the settings.
What also complicates matters is that every brand of sound card work differently.
How to set up sound when recording video with Snagit
First off, make sure you have the correct Snagit profile “Record Screen Video” or if you have made your own profiles, one that activates the Snagit screen video recording.
Step 2) Make sure you have the “microphone” (symbolizes sound) active
Look at the bottom of the Snagit management window, the Options area and make sure that the Microphone is active. It needs to have a blue circle to be active.
Step 3) Record and test
Do a quick recording of something making sound and see if the sound is recorded in the video.
If not you will need to change the settings of the sound card.
Step 4) Go to Options
This is handled a little bit different in Vista and XP.
In Vista:
1. Choose Start > Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Sound > Recording tab.
2. Right-click in that window and select Show Disabled Devices.
If you are still not getting sound after enabling devices, experiment a little bit with different settings to get it working.
In XP:
1. Choose Start > Control Panel > Sounds and Audio Devices > Audio tab.
2. In Sound recording section, verify your sound card is selected as the Default Device.
Also experiment a little bit with different settings here.
Let me know how it goes.
Hope you had some help from this one too.
Until next time 😉

Audio capture with video works only works using the microphone if I get a male/male plug and plug the speaker output into the mike input. Then it works great. An easier way is go to “Control Panel”, “Sound and Audio Devices”, then under “Sound Recording” click “Volume” then deselect the microphone input and select “Wave Out Mix” and set the volume. Works like a champ. I have to rediscover this each time because I use it so seldom but it works.

Hello
I did all the above and STILL there is no sound on my snagit captures.
Please help I am trying to put together a presentation.
Thanks
Jacki
It does work. Basically, you have to change your configurations in the settings under control panel – sounds and audio devices – then audio then sound playback and recording. I set mine for default device: of soundmax for both. Then you need a wire from your audio out/ headphone speaker wire into your line in/ microphone.. Then you have to trust that it is working or test it. Then undo the wire and you should hear the sound or put in a headphones and play your recording.
Hope this helps.
I am trying to record sound that is coming from the speakers, as I do not have a Microphone. What settings should I change?
I’ve used SnagIt for a long time, but once upgrading to Vista, I could no longer record the audio for the videos. It was quite frustrating. After trying all the suggestions – still nothing. I then found a program called liteCAM on the internet, did the trial and it picked up the audio for the videos!!! So I opted to buy the full version of that instead of upgrading to Snag-it 9.
If this cheaper program can do it – there is no reason Snag-it can’t. Don’t blame it on Vista – there a problem between the two of you.
Hello Lulu,
I don’t think anybody’s blaming Vista. Normally you shouldn’t have any problems, just a small setting with your sound card and you are done. You don’t need any additional software to do that for you.
Peter – Your Snagit Guide 😉
Well I tried all the settings for the sound card and still couldn’t get sound for the videos using Snag-it. I also contacted my sound card manufacturer and they couldn’t understand why it wouldn’t work either. Just one of those things, I guess.
I have DELL desktop with AnlogDevice Embedded sound card.
In my video capture I had sound but it was very weak indeed.
The problem was the StereoMixer slider that is (perhaps) used by SnagIt – This slider is not shown by default and (in my case was near mute level) it could INADVERTENTLY disable your sound from being recorded.
My resolution: Control Panel\Sound and Audio devices\Audio tab\Sound Recording (SoundMaxDigitalAudio as a default device)
then Volume\Options\Properties (Adjust Volume for ->Recording)
then click on the StereoMix box (so that stereo mixer slider is shown) then press OK.
Then on the Recording Control panel select StereoMix and move its slider fully upwards.
Good Luck!
I had the same problem. I fixed it by going to control panel > Sound and Audio devices > Audio Tab > Volume…
Than, make sure Stereo Mix is checked. My default had the mic checked.. Which explains why no audio was recorded because we’re not using a mic. Instead. it will record whatever is playing thru the speakers.
Problem solved!

Snagit Guide
Thanks for the info. My Stereo Mix was MUTED. :\ Once I unmuted it, viola
Thanks!!!
Here’s how I solved it on Windows XP using a SB Audigy 2 ZS sound card.
Go to Control panel -> sound & audio devices -> audio tab
click on volume under sound recording section.
I have the following input options: MIDI Synth, Analog Mix, Microphone, and WAV/MP3. Microphone was selected, which obviouslly doesnt work.
I tried selecting one at a time until it worked. The last thing I selected (WAV/MP3) worked!
As a side note, if your video captures are only producing black or possibly other color screens, try slowing down the hardware acceleration on your video card.
There is NO Sound Recording tab in Vista 64. WTF?
Hello, can someone tell me about the sound, it does record the sound but the sound is not clear like in youtube videoclip. Is it the the speed, full frame or compacted frame has something to do with it ?
Hi Peter
I`m having problems on the panel “capture video”,. It shows me “unhable to open wave input device (2)”, and it wont allows me to tape from snagit. Can you help me please?
Thanks
HOLY SMOKES! I FINALLY found the problem, the instructions are NOT specific enough, but they are close. Do this for XP:
1. Start, Settings, Control Panel.
2. Click SOUNDS-AND-AUDIO-DEVICES icon.
3. Click Audio Tab, then Sound Recording (middle part) click VOLUME.
4. (at the top) Click open the pull-down menu called OPTIONS, then click PROPERTIES.
5. Click the boxes: STEREO MIX, CD PLAYER, LINE IN. Un-click MICROPHONE and everything else.
The circular buttons above these boxes should be clicked RECORDING, playback un-clicked. Then click OK.
7. NOW! CHECK IT! Go back to #3 here, click on VOLUME again. A pop-up should come up with all your audio volume levels (stereo mix, cd player, line-in) MAKE SURE THE STEREO MIX BOX AT THE BOTTOM LEFT OF IT’S VOLUME SLIDE BAR IS CHECKED AND THE VOLUME IS UP ALL THE WAY!
For safety, unplug any microphones…
I have no idea how the audio got clicked off, or the volume reset or whatever, I never touched anything before.
Can someone also give detailed direction for resolving this issue for Vista also.
Using a Dell Dimension desktop with a SigmaTel soundcard. Read the instructions above. Read all of the comments. Tried every conceivable combination. NOTHING works — NOTHING.
Thus far my $50 investment in SnagIt is not proving worthwhile.
Hi Brian,
Are you able to record any sound with a regular microphone (outside snagit)?
Best,
Peter
Solved my problem in Vista
1. go to Control panel
2. go to Sound
3. Go to Recording (Middle Tab)
4. Right Click in the blank spot, make sure that “Show disabled Devices” is checked
5. For me Stero Mix showed up, Enable
6. Viola
I tried recording and followed all the steps above, but the sound remains at a very low volume. I needed to turn up the volume 3/4ths of the way to hear a tiny squeak of the audio.
Snagit 9 mutes my microphone array each time I start an audio/video capture.
This is very frustrating!
I go back into audio recording properties, and the mic array is muted. I unmute it, then I have my mic back…and am able to record using the Windows Sound Recorder.
Also, in Vista, there is no stereo mix at all…even when I try the steps “Tyler” suggested…stereo mix is not present, ever.
The bottom line: Snagit 9 mutes the mic each time I click “Capture”.
To help with poor sound volume in Vista, go to:
1. Control Panel
2. Hardware & Sound
3. Sound
4. Recording Tab
5. Stereo Mix – Properties
6. Advanced Tab
Under Exclusive Mode, uncheck the checkbox for “Allow applications to take exclusive control of this device”. Now go to the Levels tab and the stereo mix can be raised and the setting will be retained. Otherwise, that setting is reset by Snagit. Hope this helps.
Dear Brad Squarepants – you are a hero – your comments worked for me – and saved me so much time – well done!!!
I am trying to record video off of the site that I’m going the video capture on. I do not wish to use a mic. Nothing above has applied to my problem. I’m on a Dell laptop
Hi Eric,
Please describe the problem you are experiencing more in detail and I’ll try to assist.
All the best,
Peter
I am using snagit 10 with windows 7 and cannot record sound when recording video. Could you help? Thx.
Check out the post from Tyler October 13th, 2009 on 1:13 pm
SnagIT is NOT running.
Control Panel > Sound > Recording Tab > Right Click in white space below your recording devices. Be sure both “Show disconnected devices” AND “Show disabled devices” are checked. Highlight your new device STEREO MIX and click the Properties button > Levels Tab > Move the slider into the 70s. If you want to offset a hearing loss in either ear click the Balance button and adjust the slider. Click OK > OK > and close control panel. Launch SnagIT. ItaAutaWorka!
Thank you Andi for finding Tyler’s solution!
I’d been using snagIT successfully for years to record video with audio. Got a shiny new Win 7 computer a few months ago and ever since I got a message “There is no audio input device on this system. You need a sound card with a microphone input.” I went all around control panel looking for the disabled device & didn’t find it. Didn’t know I needed to tell Win 7 to show disabled devices. Once I found & enabled stereo mix everything’s back to normal!
I cant hear the sounds even though i have tried alot can you just help me out . Not even I am not having any sound card but before it was good now it’s not working can you tell me that why is this problem encountering agin and again
hope i recieve my answer soon than i imagine
I had a crazy windows vista microphone problem in that everything was set correctly, but it would not record! I finally figured out the simple solution!
I sure missed being able to record voice-overs for that month! I have the easy answer!
That’s great! Would you care to expand as to what the problem was and how you solved it?
Cheers,
Peter
I’m using Snagit, latest version.
Can you tell me how to make the resolution better?
The resolution or pixels for a video or screen shot will be the same as the area you capture. Perhaps I am misunderstanding you. Let me know more in detail what you want to do?
Dear Peter
I want to capture images with 300 dpi but I cant do it.
with my previous version I could easily adjust it but with this new version I can not.
Hi Mehrdad,
Snagit has always captured according to your screen settings. If you chose to capture an area 100×100 pixels your capture in Snagit will have the exact same resolution. As far as I understand dpi is a measurement for video and printing jobs and because snagit captures the screen you will get exactly the resolution you have on your screen. The screen resolution on PC is about 96 dpi so my guess is your captures will have the same resolution.
I am not sure how you could change this in previous versions. Perhaps if you describe more what it is you want to do I can experiment?
Hi. I’m not seeing the “Stereo Mix” item when I show disabled & disconnected devices in the Sound setting of the Control Panel (Win 7). Any ideas why this is not showing up for me? Is it related to the type of sound card that my PC has?
All I am seeing is:
Integrated Microphone Array
Microphone
Line In
Rec. Playback
The sound setup is working very differently in the latest Snagit. You probably only have access to the options you see.
Hi Peter,
I have started using snagit 11 shortly for creating video with sound. But the sound is very low even if i have snagit sound set to maximum the sound is low.
Can you suggest me some way by which this can be resolved?
Thanks
It sounds to me 😉 that you are recording sound through the microphone. First make sure you are recording system sound.
Best of luck with your screen recording.
Peter
I did use the Snagit video recording and it got recorded successfully but when I played it back, I can only see the mirror image of the screen. Please tell me how do I fix the issue?
Hi Imran,
How do you mean mirror image? Is it a reflection of the video only?
The Image is upside down and it is mirror image. I think, yes it is reflection of the video. Even if I rotate the screen I am not able to read anything..:(
Hi Imran,
This sounds very weird. Is this only when you capture video or images as well? Does it become upside down on what ever you capture always or is it depending on what you are trying to record?
Its happening only when I do video recording. Everything else is fine
Hi Imran,
Please provide some more details. Which version of Snagit are you using? What format are you saving the video in. What software are you using when to play the video file?
Thanks,
Peter
sure, may I have your e mail id, I can send you the screen print of the video.
I am currently using SNagit 10/Latest version of this software. This file saved in .avi format automatically and it is being played in Divx.
Hi Peter,
The problem solved when I opened the file in VLC player. But I still the problem persist with opening this file with Divx player.
Thank you so much for your help
Regards,
Imran
