I have heard some Snagit users complain about problems capturing scrolling webpages in Firefox lately . I have also experienced this problem. It was temporarily solved when I used Snagit version 10.01 and Firefox 7, but then I got the problem back when I upgraded to Firefox 8.
I use the scrolling capture functionality a lot so I contacted TechSmith to see how to solve this.
They presented me with a very elegant solution that actually ads functionality to the normal scrolling capture. I think you will find that this solution works for most Firefox releases in both Snagit version 9 and 10.
The solution is called “Custom Scrolling” and I made a short video explaining how to set it up and how to use it.
I hope you liked it. Add comments below if you have any questions or comments.
Until next time 😉
Peter – Your Snagit Guide
Thanks, Peter! This works exactly as you described in Firefox 8 and Chrome 15 for me. I like the Custom Scroll profile even better than the All-in-One auto scroll because of the ability to define the horizontal area that will be captured which easily eliminates the left and right margins I generally end up cropping out anyways in the SnagIt Editor.
while I’m click on the button arrow to scroll down the page, it’s really fast to capture, but I’m not done scrolling to down page. How to make it longer?
Hi Dheen,
You should only click the scoll button on your browser. The scrolling should then start and go on by itself.
I hope that helps.
When using custom make sure your width is not huge else it gives error and make sure you keep your cursor on scroll if you move it it ends.
But what about Snagit for Mac? I wonder why something so basic as scroll is not available on Chrome, an inherently better browser that Firefox which seems to be laden with all sorts of problems of late?
Thanks for the Tips….very useful when i am using Snagit…
Luv Snagit!
Thanx a Lot!!!
Hi Peter,
due to personal matter, I got far away from “Snagit Web page scrolling in frefox” paradigm (is that really English?!). Since last October I have also got some emails from you I have not answered: shame on me!
As for this scrolling issue, have you checked if Snagit release 10.0.2 solved a quite annoying bug that is the former realease 10.0.0.1 did not save URLs for captured Web pages anymore? So you were not able to jump back online from the captured Web page in the Snagit Editor whIle I used this feature a lot. TechSmith was aware of that bug since several months but no fix was scheduled in October yet 🙁
So would you please just check if the URL of any captured Web page is registered in the capture properties. You can access the capture properties by clicking a “More details” button at the far right in the Tags tab. Something like that, as I do use a French version of Snagit.
Cheers!
Thank you for the video about solving this annoying Snagit scrolling problem. I have Fire Fox 10.02 installed and the trail version of Snagit 11.
It does not work for scrolling in Fire Fox but it does work using Internet Explorer.
I am concerned about Snagit not fixing this issue a long time ago. I keep upgrading my software paying more money but getting the same problem again.
It seems to me that Snagit – Techsmith in general may have an issue working with Open-source software since they also do not provide a user the ability to get rid of Word, Excel etc and replace them with Open Office.
It is great that you supply this help but I have to wonder why Snagit (Techsmith) has not solved this problem in the latest version 11? But they want more money! 🙂
Thank you again, it was nice to at least see the scrolling work in a Microsoft product! Although I will not likely be opening up IE anything to often. 🙂
Hi Daryl,
I have not had any problems regarding this issue after upgrading to version 11. Please give me an example of page(s) you are having problems with and I will test how it works with Snagit 11.
Thanks!
Peter – SnagitGuide
Hi Peter,
With new Snagit11, I still have got problem using the Scrolling Window (both with IE9 and latest Firefox 4.0 Beta 7).
I want to caputure this page: http://www.primusmotor.no/shop/
The solve that is mentioned in this article works out, but it is more time consuming that having it work automaticallly.
Thanks.
Kjell
Yes, I have the same problem. I suspect it is because how the information is presented on that page.
This method also works with Firefox 11.0.
But this way, you have to capture the web pages manually (custom scrolling). I set up hot keys to capture some web pages regularly (with firefox 3.6), but when auto scrolling doesn’t work, those hot keys become useless. Is there a way to work around and use hot keys to capture scrolling web pages? Thanks.
Hi Paul,
Because custom scrolling need you to specify the area this unfortunately doesn’t work with hot keys.
Snag-on,
Peter
With reference to Snagit Ver11 vs V-8.
My job is to color code wiring systems of many wires from black wiring diagrams to colored ones. I use a circle to create many different wire colors at each point a wire changes color, including a sub striping With V-8 never had a proble with this task. V-11 is worthless compared to V-8 in do this task easy and effective. I often need to convert as many as 100 different Black drawn wires into colored wires using this method on V8. Also each wire has a main primary color and a secondary stripe color. With V-11 I find NO way to do so. In my old version 8, all you needed to do was select and create a circle outline of the main wire color; and then fill in the center with a small stripe color with ease!. Also with v-11 once you create the one part of your circle color; you cannot add the inner secondary color needed. I have tried over and over again with no success; leaving me frustrated to say the least! Even if use only one colorin my circle drawing I cannot edit it once is is placed, leaving you no choice but to delete or cut it all together, then go back to the miserable options within redrawing with version 11 all over again as it seems there is no edit feature once the initial first color is placed. Even the MS Paint can do a better job at this specific task then V-11 . To me the V-8 is much more user friendly within this particular situation. you cannot duplicate a specific option as you could in V8; which allowed you to simply click on this the previous task and copy or drag it to another spot of choice, Not so with V-11. The tool bar menu to me is not at all user friendly and time consuming as well. It seems in V-11 you the convience these options was omitted when compared to Ver 8 with it’s simple but effective mode of operation. The Only benefit I have found in V-11 over V-8, is the Scroll capture speed, of which does not justify in me the lack of the issue(s) it brings within it!
In my situation as is old Ver 8 did me a decent job in the effective process of productivity I use it for. Is there something I am overlooking with regard to my situation? Thanks you.
Hi Lee,
You can keep older installations of Snagit at the same time you install new ones, so you could use version 8 for specific jobs and v11 where you find it better suited. Although you can’t have them actively running at the same time.
If you want to download version 8 you find all older versions here:
http://77.104.138.121/~callouts/superstamps/969/snagit-old-versions/
Regarding the specific task you are describing above I have a hard time following exactly what you need to do. Is it a captured image that you have to change the colors to or is it something you did originally. Is the format .snag or another format. If you would have a chance to grab a video of what you would like to do I can perhaps see if there are easier ways to do it in version 11?
Snag-on 😉
Peter
Peter, Thanks very much. Scrolling now works perfectly using your instructions!
That really was very helpful. I had bought SnagIt 11 and then gone back to 8 because I couldn’t make it work. This works perfectly, with better functionality and wicked fast!
I tried this method. It works, but does not scroll through entire webpage – only a partial scroll. I am using Firefox 19.0.2 and Snagit 11.2
Thank you.
An impressive share! I have just forwarded this onto a
co-worker who had been conducting a little research on this.
And he actually bought me dinner simply because I stumbled upon it for him.
.. lol. So let me reword this…. Thank YOU for the meal!
! But yeah, thanx for spending the time to talk about this subject here on your site.
I SET UP MY CUSTOM SCROLLING LIKE YOU SAID. BUT FOR SOME REASON IT DOES NOT CAPTURE THE ENTIRE CAPTURE, LEAVING OFF THE LEFT SIDE OF MY CAPTURE EVEN THOUGH I MARKED IT OFF PROPERLY. I GET A SMALL BOX ON THE LEFT SHOWING X & Y COORDINATES WHICH I DID NOT SEE IN YOUR VIDEO.
THANK YOU
SANDY
Hi Sandy,
I am not sure what the problem is. It could have something to do with what kind of content there is on that particular page you are trying to capture. For example I could imagine that certain scripts on a page can be disruptive to the scrolling function.
