Hello Snagit User 😉
In this post you’ll find answers to the most common license and download questions – I lost Snagit, what do I do? I want to install Snagit on a second computer, can I? I lost my license key, can I get it back?
In connection to the emails we sent out the last weeks we have gotten a lot of similar questions and I am guessing you also perhaps could benefit from the answers.
But first, a BIG thanks to everyone that contributed to the blog post “Snagit 9 Wishlist“. We have had a fantastic response with more than 70 comments and counting.
I will huff and puff for these ideas to the Snagit development team and hopefully they will listen and implement many of them in near future releases.
If you have more ideas you would like to see implemented, please don’t hesitate to comment on the blog post and I will keep pushing for them.
Read on for common Snagit license and download questions…
Common Snagit Questions
- Q: I lost Snagit, what can I do to get it back?
You can download the latest release of Snagit here. It’s in trial status, so you will need to license it using the license key you got in connection with your original order. If you have an earlier version of Snagit you can contact us for upgrade information.
- Q: I want to install Snagit on a second computer, can I?
Yes, you can. But you need to be the user on both computers. As long as you are the user you can install using the same license on a second computer.
- Q: lost my license key, can I get it back?
Yes, if you ordered from our partner SoftwareCasa, they keep your license information so you can just contact them and request your Snagit license key. If you ordered your software at TechSmith, you can request your key here. And if you ordered elsewhere you will need to contact the company you originally purchased the software from.
And if you don’t own Snagit yet, what are you waiting for – Buy Snagit!
Until next time 😉
Peter – Your Snagit Guide
I just purchased version 9.0, download and mailed package. Thus I have as yet no manual. My first impression is less than enthusiastic. I saw no way to save the image I had just extracted. The Editor comes on the scene, unbidden, and shows a bunch of options for further alteration but no Save function that I could see.
So I went back to version 7 and found it had apparently becone v 9’s Editor again.
So I went to Photoshop, started over, added the text in the font, bold, and size I wanted to the tilted image. I doubt that SnagIt 9 can do much of that and hope I’ll find at least a way to Save an image I have extracted to a file, a simple enough task. I’m disappointed with v 9 so far. Hoping for better times. Sorry, guys.
Hello Wm,
Thank you for your comment.
You can reach the Save function in the top menu row. It’s the first button in the top left corner. Additionally you can reach the save function plus all the other main functions such as New, Open, Save As, Convert and so on by clicking on the Snagit logotype in the upper left corner.
I would also advise you to use the “Customize Quick Access Toolbar” to set the top menu to exactly the functions you need.
In mine I have included:
– Open
– Save
– Save As
– Print
– Step back/Step forward
– Rezise
– Callout
– Stamp
– Copy
So I always have immediate access to these functions with one click.

When capturing an area with scrolling, it worked once and does not work any more. I am using SnagIt 7.2.5.
Is this a bug?
Thanks.
-Wayne
Hello Wayne,
No, most likely it is because you are using version 7 but have upgraded your internet browser. This may be a small upgrade of the browser but with changed functionality.
I would suggest that you test a later version of Snagit to see if you don’t get the functionality back and there are also a lot of great new functionality.
You can verify your old license and upgrade here:

I downloaded a free trial copy of Snagit -v.9. I have since been approved a licensed copy from my company – I uninstalled the downloaded version, installed the licensed version however am getting a pop box stating that the trailversion time is up. How can I get rid of this? The file must be hidden somewhere – but, it is preventing me from using my licensed copy.
Any ideas? Thank you – Janet
Hello Janet,
You don’t need to uninstall the trial copy but instead you can license it directly. The next time the license question comes up, just choose that you have license and enter your key.

My company recently upgraded to Vista and ever since my SnagIt hasn’t been working as effectively as before. My main problem is I’ll “capture” something, right click to copy and then go to paste in a new place & it pastes the capture I took just before the last one, as though it’s not holding my current capture in the queu. This is very confusing and I don’t know why this is happening. Any ideas???
Is there a way to look up my license key via the registry or some place in the application?
We’re doing a true-up on licenses for snag-it within my group at work.
Need to know where everyone can find theres, sourcing handles the ordering of snag-it so i’m not sure where we ordered from or if i would be able to talk to a vendor.
This is so simple a requirement I feel Snagit is way to complex for me. I simply want to put the captured snag into the Editor, modify it then save it from there. Is this too much to ask of this program?
Hi Dan,
The beauty of well developed software is that it is easy for the beginner but then has more functionality you can use when you grow as a user.
Snagit is very true in this aspect. All you need to know about is the print screen button. Just click it and drag the area around what you want to capture. The image automatically is saved to the editor where you can edit it – or not if you prefer.
It can’t get any easier than that.
Cheers,
Peter
Hi Peter,
My philosophy is simple: If I have to go to HELP to learn the basic functioning of a program then that program is not for me. I am conversant with capture software. You missed my most important issue with Snagit. You say the image is “saved” to the editor. Nothing is saved to an editor. Images and documents are saved FROM an Editor. An editor isn’t the end of the journey. A file is.
Your Send block in the editor has four options: e-mail, ftp, program, clipboard. Nowhere do I see “save” (which means save to file) and I certainly don’t want to move my edited image to clipboard. I want to SAVE it.
I have used Snagit for 3 days now, consulting Help frequently, and I still can’t perform the basic function of capture software: Snag-Edit (or not)-Save to file.
Hi Dan,
I didn’t miss your point. The fact is that the image is actually saved to the editor. This is the end of the line if you so wish. The editor will store all the images for you. You can also tag them, find them via dates of flags if you so desire.
No need to do anything. It’s already saved 😉
I hope this helps.
Let me know what other functionality you find confusing and we’ll see what we can do.
All the best,
Peter
Dan,
If you have your image up in the editor, then go to File>Save As – it will allow you to specify another location to save the file.
Hi Sara,
That’s true. But you don’t need to do that. Your image will still be saved even if you don’t do anything.
Cheers,
Peter
Peter,
I realize you don’t need to do it, but sometimes it’s necessary to have those images available elsewhere. And I think that’s what Dan was looking for.
Thanks for the TechSmith key request link, Peter. It was a lifesaver.

Reboot IT Now, LLC.
I have several SnagIt licenses (NOT multiuser). How can I tell which license is being used on each computer?
Open Snagit, chose Help/About Snagit. Your license key should be listed there under the Snagit logo.
I hope that helps.

I am using a Mac. I love the program, but for some reason when I go to edit something in a file, the eraser is leaving a checkerboard pattern in its wake, when I simply want it to erase in white. What I am missing?
thanks
Hi Tim,
You are erasing to transparent. The checkerboard indicates that it is transparent so if you paste it on a pink background you will see pink in the areas where you have erased. To erase to white you need to change the eraser color from transparent to white.
Snag-on 😉

sir, can i use again snagit 11 trial version for 30 days in the same PC ???????
Hello Rashmi,
No, the trial is for 30 days, after that you cannot use the software. You would need to order the software to continue using it. You can see more details and order here:

Hi, I am working with a large 80Mb tiff file on my vista pc with snagit 10 editor. All the sudden the bevier lines have no more handles and when I draw such a line it is directly flatten. I think I might have done something earlier this week that makes this happen.
Is there any setting that toggles this behavior back to normal so I can again move or change shape of bevier lines?
Thanks
Why are you workign with a tiff file? Try resaving it in for example jpg and see if it is easier to work with as 80MB is quite a large file. That may fix the problems you are experiencing.
Using SnagIt 10 and the color presentation on the editor is not what prints out. I used a low opacity to save ink and make a better presentation, but the print goes full throttle color.
What did I miss? Thanks!
I’ve dropped my laptop and it’s in bad shape I want to get another one can I move my Snagit 11 to my new labtop when I get one?
Hi Carl,
Yes. You can download a new copy of Snagit 11 here.
Use the same license for your new installation.
Enjoy 😉
Peter
Thanks very much Peter!
Let me start with “I LOVE SNAGIT”!!
How can I tell what version I am using and if there is an even better version?
Hi Tricia,
Thanks, I love Snagit too 🙂 The whole reason I am running this blog 😉
I will answer your second question first. Snagit is always being developed and improved upon and I think the latest version, currently 11.2 is definitely well worth upgrading to as it has loads of new features.
Check out Snagit 11.2 and upgrade here
How to check your current Snagit version
1) Open Snagit
2) Go to Help/About Snagit
3) Under the Snagit Logo you will find your version.
Hi,
1. Is Snagit tool a perpetual license (one time purchase) or a subscription based license (renewal every year or so).
2. Will the support also has separate cost.
3. Also confirm if after what duration can a user upgrade to higher version. 4. Will upgrade has some cost associated ?
Thanks & Regards,
Sandeepkumar Singh
Hello Sandeepkumar,
The Snagit license is perpetual, meaning you can use if for as long as you like. No, support is free. When a new major version is released you can chose to keep on using your existing version, or for a smaller cost, upgrade to the new major release.
You can upgrade Snagit to the last major version 11 here:

All the best,
Peter
Upgrading my company pc from xp to 7. looked under help>about snagit for the License key as mentioned above. Mine lists Multi-User License but no number. where can i find my Multi-User License number?
Thanks
Mike
Hi Mike,
For Multi-licenses you cannot see the license the way it’s mentioned above. You will need to find the original purchase and retrieve the license that way.
If you are interested in upgrading check out the new version here:
http://www.softwarecasa.com/snagit-upgrade.html
I have snagit installed on 3 computers have 3 licenses but 1 licenses was install on 2 pc at same time. How can I change the key so each pc has their own key with out hunting down in the registry. Or should I be concerned as long as I have the 3 licenses on file?
Thanks
Deb
Hi Deb, I think it’s safe to say that you shouldn’t touch the registry. I would always advice you to contact TechSmith when it comes to license issues. In this case I think it would be OK to keep it the way it is and then when you upgrade the software in the future, set it up correctly.
Hi – I work for a consulting firm and our client purchased 2 licenses for us to use on our client work, however the licenses have been setup on our consulting firm laptops. Once we complete the project and leave the client, we would like to leave the licenses with our client. Is it possible to permanently remove the licenses from our consulting firm laptops and give them permanently to our client users when we roll off?
Thanks,
Mike
Hi Mike,
The licenses for Snagit is registered on a person, so to make it easier for your client to get future support, upgrades etc. you should contact the company where you purchased the licenses and have them update the records.
